Gregorian Melodies :: David Phillips
Ave Regina Coelorum
GS1033-12

Ave Regina Caelorum is one of four Marian antiphons traditionally said or sung after each of the canonical hours of the Liturgy of the Hours. The prayer is used especially after Compline, the final hour of prayer before going to sleep. It has been in use since the twelfth century. Presented here is an instrumental setting of this beautiful Gregorian chant.

Ave, Regina caelorum,
Ave, Domina Angelorum:
Salve, radix, salve, porta
Ex qua mundo lux est orta:
Gaude, Virgo gloriosa,
Super omnes speciosa,
Vale, o valde decora,
Et pro nobis Christum exora.

Hail, Queen of heaven;
Hail, Mistress of the Angels;
Hail, root of Jesus;
Hail, the gate through which the
Light rose over the earth.
Rejoice, Virgin most renowned
and of unsurpassed beauty,
and pray for us to Christ.
